What to do on the Barcelona Coast and Alt Maresme
Costa Barcelona has more than 100 kilometers of coastline dotted with charming cities and fishing villages. Natural parks, golf courses, impressive monuments, nightlife, popular festivals and the most tasty gastronomy are some of the attractions of this area of the Mediterranean
Its beaches, with golden sand and crystalline waters, have all kinds of services and are characterized by its variety.
Being located between the Mediterranean and the mountains, it has a climate of warm summers and mild winters and preserves surprising landscapes such as the Montserrat Mountain Natural Park, the Tordera Delta or the Garraf Park.
But if we have to highlight an attribute of this area, it is its gastronomy. Each of the towns in this part of Catalonia has a multitude of restaurants that are committed to traditional Mediterranean cuisine.
What to do at Maresme?
Maresme is full of ideas and good proposals to get out of the hotel and escape from the routine. Culture, gastronomy, leisure and a practically infinite number of experiences for all tastes and all ages come together.
Villages to visit at Maresme:
CALELLA
Known as Calella de la Costa, it has earned its status as the tourist capital of this Catalan coastal region. You can find natural areas such as Dalmau Park, Manuel Puigvert promenade, Garbí promenade or Les Torretes, that make Calella a dynamic city, modern and welcoming that allows the visitor to enjoy a destination with its own uniqueness.
SANT POL DE MAR
Kissed by the Mediterranean, today it becomes one of the most attractive towns on the Maresme coast. Sant Pol de Mar is a fishing village that still retains that charm and magic of the "lifetime Maresme" with narrow streets and with a very Mediterranean touch. Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful and quiet historical centers in the entire region, which is impossible not to fall completely in love with it. This appearance, together with the great urban offer that it has, arouses the interest of many people from nearby cities and tourists who come to spend the summer there.
ALELLA
Alella is, thanks to the denomination of origin that bears its name, one of the best-known towns in the region. A small urban nucleus surrounded by vineyards, which we always recommend to go if you want to enjoy a good vermouth or a good foork breakfast (esmorzars de forquilla).
MATARÓ
Mataró is the capital of the region and it may not fit perfectly with the definition of a tourist town, but we still think that your visit is recommended. First of all because of the good level of its restaurants, the medieval air of its historic center and some of its interesting cultural proposals. Without a doubt, gastronomy is the great hidden attraction of Mataró.9
Charming beaches of the Maresme:
One of the main attractions of the Maresme, both for tourists and residents, are the magnificent beaches that characterize the 16 coastal towns of this region.
For lovers of nature and the sea, the small rocky coves with white sand and the extensive beaches of golden sand will undoubtedly be an idyllic space to spend unforgettable days. These are mainly characterized by the quality of their waters. Maresme has ten beaches with the distinctive blue flag and three with the Q for tourist quality.
In addition, the mild climate and the clear and sunny days throughout the year make the Maresme coastline a perfect setting for practicing water sports, enjoying the landscape and a wide range of activities such as scuba diving, fishing, paddle surfing or kayaking.
· Playa de las Rocas Blancas, the secret of Canet and Sant Pol de Mar
If you prefer to avoid the excessive ease of access to avoid bathers, Playa de las Rocas Blancas is your corner. Among the beaches of Maresme, it is one of the most isolated and does not have a promenade. It keeps its wild appearance and is surrounded by white rocks that protect the transparent waters and bathe a scarce 300 meters of coastline. A corner to spread the towel and avoid the commotion of beaches that have, for example, a Renfe stop.
· Roca Grossa Beach (Calella)
Between Sant Pol de Mar and Calella we find one of the jewels of the Maresme: a 100-meter-long beach featuring a large rock and escorted by a cliff that leaves you breathless, a corner of the coastline with a Costa Brava air that offers a space privileged and exclusive. This is one of the postcards of the Maresme and the most negative part is that in recent years it has become common knowledge. Our advice? Go soon !!!
Cultural Routes in the Maresme
Maresme is a region rich in culture and, thanks to its historical legacy, you can do from archaeological routes (especially those from the Iberian-Roman period) to modernist and Indian routes, or those that review the industrial legacy of the region.
The industrialization of the region and the conversion into a summer resort of the Barcelona and Catalan bourgeoisie turned the Maresme into a rich territory in modernist architecture, linked to the first works of the most important architects of that movement: Montaner (Canet de Mar), Josep Puig i Cadafalch (Mataró and Argentona) and Antoni Gaudí (Mataró and Alella).
Among the routes offered by the municipalities, without a doubt, the Modernism routes linked to Canet de Mar, Mataró and Argentona stand out. But there are many others, of a literary or gastronomic nature or even those that propose a more direct contact with nature.
Gastronomy in Maresme
El Maresme is one of the great orchards in the country, rich in local produce, as evidenced by the more than 50 gastronomic events held throughout the year. But it is also rich in seafood, traditional cuisine, artisan preparation ...
In Maresme cuisine, predominate the fish and vegetable stews dishes. Some of the products from Maresme have acquired a good reputation, such as the strawberries from La Vallalta, the cherries (cireres de Roca) from Arenys de Munt, the peas from Mataró, the beans from Caldes d'Estrac, hook beans from Malgrat de Mar and Palafolls, mushrooms from Baix Maresme or grapes from DO Alella.
From the sea, we must highlight the squid, prawns, crayfish and clams from Arenys de Mar.
The gastronomy of Maresme would not be complete without its sweets: the "coca de Llavaneres", the chocolate buns from Arenys or the "coca de vidre" from Canet de Mar are a good example of the great variety that exists.
Leisure and Sports in the Maresme
Do you like to go shopping? The Maresme is an ideal destination for it. In Maresme you will find shops of all kinds willing to offer you what you are looking for. Here you will find genuine and local products to enjoy some km0 shopping. Weekly markets, fairs and thematic markets that go out to the streets offer the opportunity to enjoy outdoor shopping.
One of the destinations with its own stamp is our neighbor, Calella. This coastal town is strongly committed to shopping tourism. The Calella Shopping Line is 2km long, with more than 500 stores in the center of the town. Located on Carrer de la Iglesia, it combines an offer of exclusive brands and small shops with cultural visits and restaurants so that you can also discover Calella's Renaissance heritage and gastronomy.
Talking about Sports tourisme, Maresme has a wide network of roads and trails that connect its villages and allow you to discover a natural environment that splendid that lives between the Mediterranean Sea and the coastal mountain path. You can do walks through vineyards, trekking through parks like the one we have in Pineda (read above), Montnegre and El Corredor, or routes to discover beautiful places such as Burriac Castle or the Argentona's fountains. Through these excursions you can explore the Maresme both on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.
You can look up your itinerary on Wikiloc.
We hope you enjoy your visit :)
